The weather for this particular day was one of Angelica Welbourne's favorites--white-gray clouds billowing overhead, the wind in the low-fifties or so, the air's scent giving off a prediction of a rain later on. God knew Angelica loved the rain. She stretched her arms over her head and stared down over the railing of the dock at her reflection in the cool, navy blue water. Her glossy chestnut brown hair was fixed over her shoulders, making a trail to the middle of her back. She donned a royal blue American Apparel hoody over a black three-quarter sleeve T-Shirt. Her dark denim skinny jeans were tucked into a pair of old gray Uggs. In her hand, she clutched a small plaid notebook. She hadn't been wearing her usual designer outfits these past few days, and she was beginning to grow used to it. But she was sure that would change when warm weather came and stayed for good (at least until winter came around again), when she went on her seasonal trips to the mall to recreate that season's wardrobe. Money was the sort of thing that came easily--very easily--to the Welbournes. All she had to do was feed her father her signature "Please, Daddy?" and into her wallet another couple hundreds would go. Not that she needed to lately, anyways. The wallet was fat with the mass of bills she had been saving up just for her spring wardrobe restock. She smiled at herself before leaving the edge of the dock to sit on one of the benches.
Angelica sprawled out on its wooden seat, notebook open in front of her. There was only one name on both pages, but it filled up almost all the spaces. Angelica uncapped her orange felt pen and started doodling the name again--Oliver Krane, over and over. She smiled just thinking of him, a warm feeling spreading all the way through her system. He was the kind of guy that made her break away from this glamorous persona she had on twenty-four/seven and just be the awkward, Pokemon-loving dork that came out only when you really knew her. Of course, he still knew her as everyone else knew her--no matter how much of the "hidden Angelica" came out when she was with him, the same Angelica--the girl who goes shopping like it's a religion, the girl who always rolled with the in-crowd--would always be present. It kind of seemed funny, when you pictured the two of them together, something Angelica did on a daily basis--Oliver, who was a bit nerdy, and Angelica, always finding a way to climb higher and higher on the social ladder when she was already at the top. But it was that nerdiness of Oliver she absolutely adored--the way he was the one she always ran to when she had no idea what the lessons in their classes were about, the way everything he said just sounded so smart... She liked that he wasn't the first person they would picture Angelica with, when he was the only one she wanted to be with. It was totally obvious she was in love with him--pretty much everyone and their mother knew about her feelings. Everyone, of course, except Oliver himself, the twelve-year-old noted bitterly. But although she wished he knew how she felt, she didn't at the same time. There was always the risk that he didn't like her back, and the way things seemed, Angelica was, with a heavy heart, leaning towards it, though she didn't want to. There wasn't anyone or anything she wanted so badly as to be with Oliver. Heck, she could even imagine spending the rest of forever with him. It sucked being so helpless. Angelica capped her pen and huffed out a sigh.
Angelica didn't get it. When it came to guys, she usually had the upper hand--not like she'd ever been in a relationship before. Angelica pursed her lips. There had always been guys interested in her in the past, but Angelica never felt strongly enough to actually continue on in it. And with Oliver in the picture now, there was definitely no chance of feeling that way for anyone else. Ever since seventh grade started, the whole year had been about him--always leaving class early just to catch him disappearing into his next one, casually walking her group of friends over to where she could see him from a distance… She had only known him since the first day of school, but already, he was the most important person in her life and he wasn't even hers. She pouted a bit at this thought. The fact that they weren't together bothered her so much it almost brought her to tears. Angelica had always been pathetic like that. It seemed almost impossible how he couldn't love her back, considering how strongly she felt for him. But then there was the fact that Angelica, despite her glamorous outlook, was much unlike her sister Kylie in the way that she was the most awkward person she knew. Whenever Oliver was near, Angelica found some way to screw things up. Angelica gazed at the open notebook and wished he was there with her.
